May 16, 2017: Here’s what’s hitting Blu-ray, Digital HD and DVD this week
We’re kicking off our guide to Blu-ray and DVD this week with a look behind the scenes at Extortion. Written and directed by Phil Volken, the film stars Academy Award nominee Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips). Check out the video in the player below!
With Wonder Woman heading to the big screen June 2, Warner Bros. has a new “commemorative edition” release of their original animated Wonder Womanfilm. Likewise, Universal Pictures is prepping for next month’s The Mummywith two new “Legacy Collections” of classic Universal Monsters films. Look for a Draculaset that includes Dracula, Dracula’s Daughter, Son of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, and a Mummyset that includes The Mummy, The Mummy’s Hand, The Mummy’s Tomb, The Mummy’s Ghost, The Mummy’s Curse and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.
Warner Archive this weeks brings to Blu-ray Vision Quest, director Harold Becker’s 1985 romantic drama that helped launch the careers of stars Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino. It arrive via the MOD service and marks the film’s first ever HD release.
Shout! Factory has quite a few great titles hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week. First up, a double helping of killer rats heads to the Scream Factory label. Look for new collector’s edition releases of both the original Willardand it’s sequel, Ben. Then, the Shout Select line expands with Walter Hill’s incredible cult classic Streets of Firealongside two Bruce Lee features: 1972’s Return of the Dragonand 1978’s Game of Death, which tragically marked the final film from the late star.
Small screen releases offer a double helping of animated monsters. Look for the first new Digimon AdventureOVA as well as the complete Pokemon Advanced. Rounding off the television titles is a re-release of the fifth volume of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The new set arrives on DVD this week, replacing the long out of print Rhino edition from 2004.
Arriving via Digital HD this week is the recent comedy Fist Fight, the religious drama The Shack, and a two very different superhero films: The LEGO Batman Movieand Logan. Then, on May 19, you’ll be able to catch IFC Midnight’s latest, The Survivalist.
